Seeking Quilts Loved by Multiple Family Generations!

Flint Handmade is now accepting submissions for the 2011 Flint Festival of Quilts!

We are seeking quilted pieces to display at The Lunch Studio!  Quilts can be newly made or well-worn and well-loved!

We will feature a wide range of quilts made in the 20th and 21st centuries by members of the same family. Everything from baby quilts made by parents for their children to quilted blankets finished by the grandchildren of the women who began then decades before will be on display.

The styles and patterns of the quilts can vary greatly, but they all must share the common thread of having been made for, passed on to or finished by different generations. Whether connected by blood, marriage or simply love, a family can be defined anyway you want, so we encourage all submissions!

If you would like to display a quilt, please email a photo and brief description of the piece(s) to flinthandmade@hotmail.com by 5pm on Friday, August 19, 2011.

This a FREE FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE showcase. At least one piece per person will be automatically accepted, provided it fits with theme of connecting families across generations.  You do not have to have made the quilt yourself to submit it.

For more information and photos, check out our blog posts from our Contemporary Fiber Art Exhibition at the 2009 Festival of Quilts and our Progressive Patchwork: Eclectic and Eco-Aware Quilts Exhibition at the 2010 Festival of Quilts.

The quilt pictured above is called "Such is Life" and was made by Michelle Stolz of Aisle 3 from fabric she found at a Flint Handmade Craft Supply Swap. "Such is Life" was inspired by Michelle's 2-year old son, Milo, and was displayed in the 2010 Festival of Quilts.

2011 Cool City Art Auction Recap

Posted by Crystal Pepperdine, Founder and Executive Director of Flint Handmade

Thank you so much to everyone who attended the 8th Annual Financial Plus Cool City Art Auction on Friday, March 25, 2011!

Flint Handmade sold over $1,000 in auction items, tickets and knuckles merchandise.  We appreciate your support!

Tracey of The Lunch Studio served up a delicious menu of shrimp tartlets, bruschetta and lots of other goodies.

Steph (l) and Sarah donated their time and worked behind the counter serving beverages.  Thanks, ladies!

My little sis, April (l), drove up from Ann Arbor to help work the registration table!

We're grooming Milo to become one of the next generation of creative folks revitalizing downtown Flint!

Lots of great auction items!

Our super top secret project was wood photo blocks decorated by local crafters.  Our gratitude to Anne, Jeanette, Mary and Sherry!

We had a Flint Handmade Knuckles Prize Pack in the auction!

Carie (l) and friends enjoyed the tasty wines from d'Vine Wines!

DJ Pale Ale (aka Al of Arlow Xan) played some awesome classic rock 'n' roll!

Special thanks to Russ (l) for selling Knuckles merch and helping clean up at the end of the night!

Also, much love to our Location Sponsor...the Flint Downtown Small Business Association! We didn't get a photo of your banner outside, but it looked great!

We can't wait to do it all again at the 2012 Cool City Art Auction!  :)

July 2010 ArtWalk in Downtown Flint

Posted by Crystal

Lemme tell you straight out: THE SPARK IS BACK IN FLINT!

In the past 5 to 10 years, Flint has seen a HUGE amount of revitalization and reinvestment on the part of residents, nonprofits, businesses, foundations and arts organizations.

Downtown Flint is now home to several art galleries, restaurants, cafes and businesses.  We have a yoga studio, hair salon, bookstore and tshirt shop.  We host dozens of art shows, music festivals, car and motorcycle shows, road races and other large events.

One monthly event that you MUST check out is ArtWalk!  Hosted on the second Friday of each month by the Greater Flint Arts Council, ArtWalk features exhibitions and vending by local artists and crafters in multiple locations on Saginaw Street.

The July 2010 ArtWalk was outstanding!
